IPS Manoj Sharma was born on 3rd July 1975 in Bilgaon, Muraina district, Madhya Pradesh, into a poor family. His father worked as a poor farmer, earning a livelihood from the fields. Manoj Sharma completed his early education in a village school but struggled academically, leading to his failure in the 12th class in every subject.
After completing his 12th class, Manoj and his elder brother started driving an Auto in their village to improve their family’s financial condition. They transported passengers from one stop to the next, with Manoj working as the Auto conductor. However, this venture didn’t yield positive results and was short-lived since buses were readily available in their village. This marked the initial phase of struggles in Manoj Sharma’s life.

Story Of Manoj Kumar Sharma: The Turning Point Of Their Life
One day, the police caught Manoj Sharma’s Auto, and to retrieve it, they had to go to the SDM office in their area. Initially apprehensive, Manoj Sharma and his brother eventually went to the SDM office. Inspired by the SDM, Manoj Sharma forgot about the Auto and asked the SDM how he could attain such a position. This incident sparked a newfound aspiration in Manoj Kumar, leading him to embark on a journey towards that goal. However, the path was not easy, given their financial constraints and Manoj’s academic challenges.
Nevertheless, as they say, where there is a will, there is a way.

Subsequently, a new chapter of struggle began for Manoj. He left his village and moved to Gwalior, Madhya Pradesh, where he found work at a library named ‘Madhya Bhartiya Hindi Sahitya Sabha,’ serving as a library cleaner. The library hosted a literature competition every Saturday, attracting renowned poets and writers who shared their insights. Inspired by them, Manoj Sharma also started writing. To overcome his lack of confidence, he began speaking in solitude at night after everyone had left the library. Locking the door, he practised speaking for hours, a routine that significantly boosted Manoj’s confidence.
One day, the head of the library accused Manoj Sharma of dishonesty, alleging that he cheated. The library head claimed that the waste papers sold by Manoj Sharma did not fetch the full amount. Manoj Sharma defended himself, stating that they were sold for ₹4800, while the accusation insisted that the same amount had been sold for ₹6000 the previous year. Following this incident, Manoj Sharma decided to resign from his job, asserting,
‘You can criticize me, hurt me, but you cannot tarnish my reputation for honesty.
There was a time in Manoj Sharma’s life when he worked at an ‘Ata Chakki.’ He used to grind wheat in the chakki, which was a very challenging and hard job.
IPS Manoj Sharma’s UPSC Journey Amidst Challenges
When Manoj Sharma embarked on his UPSC (Union Public Service Commission) preparation journey, he demonstrated a commendable command over the Prelims exam on his first attempt. Clearing the UPSC 1st stage Prelims through self-study, he faced a setback in the 2nd stage Mains exam. Subsequently, Manoj moved to Delhi and joined ‘The Drishti IAS‘ coaching centre, a pivotal decision in his preparation journey.
Balancing his livelihood with studies, Manoj took on the role of a dog caretaker in affluent households, earning Rs. 400 per dog. Despite the challenges, he embraced the opportunity, embodying the ethos of doing any job regardless of its nature. There came a phase in his life when he could afford only one meal a day, highlighting the struggles he endured.
In the UPSC journey, Manoj faced failure in his first three attempts. Despite cracking the Prelims in two attempts, he persevered through the setbacks. Undeterred, he held onto the belief that ‘he who does not fight loses.’ With unwavering determination and learning from past mistakes, Manoj finally succeeded in his 4th attempt. In the UPSC examination of 2005, he secured an All India Rank of 121 and fulfilled his dream of becoming an IPS officer.

IRS Shradha Joshi hails from Almora, Uttarakhand, where her parents work as teachers. Shradha developed a keen interest in studies since her childhood. In her 12th class, when Uttarakhand was still part of Uttar Pradesh, she achieved a commendable percentage and secured the 13th rank among the top 30 students of the year.
Initially, her parents aspired for her to become a doctor, but during her graduation, Shradha discovered her interest in civil services. She decided to crack the UPSC exam. After completing her graduation, she moved to New Delhi and joined the Drishti IAS coaching centre. On her first day, she encountered Manoj Sharma.
