- On Friday, November 17, 2023, OpenAI’s board, comprising researcher Helen Toner, Quora CEO Adam D’Angelo, AI governance advocate Tasha McCauley, and notably, OpenAI co-founder and chief scientist Ilya Sutskever, announced the removal of Altman as CEO and Greg Brockman from the board, both of whom were co-founders.
- Following this decision, Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella disclosed that Altman would be hired to lead an AI research program at Microsoft. However, OpenAI employees threatened resignation if Altman was reinstated as CEO.
- Despite resistance from many directors, Altman was offered the CEO position at OpenAI once again. Bret Taylor, Larry Summers, and Adam D’Angelo were appointed as new board members.
- Altman confessed in an interview that it took him some time to overcome his ego and emotions upon receiving the offer to return as CEO of OpenAI. Ultimately, he chose to accept the proposal.
